Mensa members are scattered throughout the county with
the greatest
concentration living and working on the Monterey Peninsula or in Salinas.
Each qualified for membership with a score in the top 2% of the population
on a
standardized IQ test.
What do the members of Monterey County Mensa do?
First, we have fun socializing. Our monthly newsletter, Of Mice and Mensa,
lists a variety of activities that bring us together: brunches, dining out,
parties at members' homes, games nights, theatre parties, and sharing in
concerts and hikes presented by other groups.
Whenever we congregate, wide-ranging discussion seems to be our form of
entertainment. We become acquainted with each other and then we celebrate
the pleasure of our camaraderie!
In addition to our own local events, there are many regional, national and
international Mensa gatherings - at which all members are welcome.
But we are more than just a social organization. Although one of
Mensa's
purposes, as stated in our constitution, is "to promote stimulating
intellectual and social opportunities for its members," another is to
"identify and foster human intelligence for the benefit of humanity." With
this in mind, local Mensans also contribute energy, knowledge and money to
educational, adult literacy, and similar programs in our community.
To support such activities, and to keep our group going, we also do some
fundraising - another good excuse for socializing! You may find us helping
at the Scottish-Irish Festival or running an occasional garage sale.
